General Rules and Regulations
1: Always treat other members with respect
We can't all get along, I know that. But we can at least try to respect the reason why we're all here; to have fun… if not, this probably isn't the place for you to be.
So, by and large, treat everyone how you'd like to be treated and you can expect the same of others
2: No Trolling
“Trolling is originally a Usenet expression, derived from fishing terminology, and is defined as needlessly baiting other members for a response, usually to draw-out a discussion that has already been resolved, and can often be seen as obnoxious or insulting. It will almost inevitably lead to flaming on behalf of the victim of trolling as a sign of their exasperation, as it is an effective way to indirectly antagonize.” - Quoted from Abar Luach
We will not tolerate trolls. Full stop, no exceptions
3: Try and write down what you're wanting your character/s to say or do as clear as you can possibly achieve
It's understandable that some people may slip up or have trouble with spelling/grammar, especially if English isn't their first language, but it's inexcusable if people do roleplays without giving much forethought into what they're writing.
This isn't a race, we have no deadline... so calm down, relax and try to think things through before you make a post
4: All explicit content on the board should be marked for Mature content
The reason for this is that we don't want Proboards to kick us off because of new users being able to access things they shouldn't, especially if they're underage and/or explicit content is illegal in their community.
If your topics are heading to getting situations which would be too graphic or unsuitable for young eyes, just make sure that the tread topic is appropriately marked as such.
5: You are allowed to have as many characters as you like
You are allowed to have as many characters as you like and be in as many topics as you think you can handle with them. Although it requires a little bit of suspension of disbelief, just imagine the topics taking place at different times of the day
Also, be very careful if you are doing more than one topic at a time and they are big plots. It will confuse people if you jump into a storyline and say or imply things that have that haven't yet occurred in that storyline.
Continuity is a huge issue
6: No God-modding/Power-playing
“'God-moding' is the unauthorized controlling of another roleplayer’s character or nation, or the unauthorized manipulation of the in-game environment. This usually occurs to the advantage of the offending roleplayer, although often may just disadvantage other roleplayers. God-modding is considered both rude and a sign of poor creativity.” - Quoted from Abar Luach
It's not fun when you have someone who just refuses to let someone get a shot in them or are just so over-protective of their character they refuse to do anything that pure and simple logic would dictate otherwise. If you start to Godmod then you risk being permanently banned from the board
7: Please make account(s) using your character‘s name
When you sign up for a character make it easier on us all by having your account name match the character you're using for it.
As mentioned previously, you are allowed to have as many characters as you'd like, though the same rule applies for any additional characters you have
8: Please try and work with other roleplayers according to their individual writing/playing style
Talking with other members about plots and roleplays is perfectly fine, but keep in mind that everyone has different ways of writing and a different way of roleplaying.
Some like to plan a lot in advance in a plot… some only like to plan the finish of the plot and let themselves have fun working their way to getting to their mutual goal… whilst others don't like to plan anything in advance, much preferring to throw things up in the air and wherever the card may land is their choice of action.
Please, do your best to work to the preferences of others. It saves time between players arguing which could have been spent writing roleplays
9: No Meta-Gaming
“'Meta-gaming' encompasses several different violations of the roleplaying scenario, although it is loosely defined as the use of out-of-character information in an in-character situation. Meta-gaming affects the ‘realist’ atmosphere of roleplaying, and it also undermines the creativity that goes into creating and taking part in in-character situations. - Quoted from Abar Luach
Meta gaming means;
- Adjusting a character's actions if the player has some foreknowledge of the long-term intentions of the roleplayer
- Knowing something about a character that your character shouldn’t normally know
- Adjusting how you react, attack/fight towards another role-players character without your character actually knowing it
- Adjusting a character's behaviour towards other player characters based on real-life relationships with other players</li>
Depending on the severity of the offence reported/found by the Admin, Moderators or other roleplayers in the storyline, the Meta-gamer will probably be asked to edit their post accordingly, though repeat offenders will be dealt with accordingly
10: Killing Characters and Changing Species
It is absolutely forbidden for any member to kill another member’s character without both parties expressed permission and the Admin is informed by both parties beforehand.
It is also forbidden for any member to change their own character’s Species, or force another member’s character to undergo a change of Species, without both parties expressed permission and the Admin is informed by both parties beforehand.
This request is done for multiple reasons…
Firstly, it is so we know how to keep track of and when to move your character’s bio to its new category in the roster of active characters as well as give advice/help on editing the character’s profile and changing your character’s forum mask to reflect their new Species.
And secondly, it is to prevent abuse from other members taking action without the permission of the other character‘s handler
11: Plagiarism
Plagiarism is taken very seriously here. Bumping ideas, thoughts, and ways of doing things is one thing… but stealing someone’s art, writing and characters without permission is unquestionably stealing and will be dealt with accordingly.
If you want something, if you want a graphic, or want permission to use something from someone you must ask the owner and wait for acceptance from them.
If they do not say yes, then you must not use what you have asked for… and silence is not an acceptance.
All work is copyrighted by the owners in which publish it. This means characters, banners and storylines. Respect artists and writers for what they are
12: The information we provide here is for YOU
When making characters, we at the Modern Nights, have tried our best to provide you with the best source material we can in order to help you create and improve your characters.
Our Admins and Moderators also have plenty of material on hand or on their computers to help handlers in the event they need assistance with creating and researching for characters
Don‘t hesitate to ask if you need help or advice. We will try and help you as much as we can
13: Please tag your topics
Tagging your topics is fairly important. If a topic is intended for a specific person or group, please tag it so.
14: Fun is compulsory
